Course Description: Freshman Composition II (3 credits hours) focuses on critical reading of literature, essay writing, and research.
You've spent a semester in EH 101 developing your critical reading skills on non-fiction essays; now it's time to use those same skills on fiction, poetry, and drama. Welcome to the wonderful world of literature, where poets make you cry, short story writers challenge you to dream, and plays invite you to act on your catharsis! Through class discussions and your own analysis of these works, you'll develop a vocabulary and critical reading skills appropriate for literary texts. Writing will function as another tool for uncovering and developing your thoughts about what you read. We will also read and respond to critical articles on some of the literature and you will have the opportunity to engage in further research.
Prerequisite: EH 101.

Other tools for your literary toolbox:
How do we get there? Discussing literature in a class often produces magic—a trail of thought that uncovers new understanding, disputes that deepen our reading of the world, phrases that make us grab pen and paper to write our own poems. Make the magic happen by reading well in preparation for class discussions. The reading journal will help you do that. Be honest and speak up. Stand behind your words. Follow your own curiosity. Write, write, write. We'll write a lot in class and out, and we'll respond to each other's writing.

Writing Center: The Writing Center's website (www.uah.edu/writing) offers excellent resources, as does the Center itself.
Attendance: Departmental policy states that students who miss over 20% of scheduled class meetings in a freshman class must receive a grade of NC.
Late work: Avoid it! Homework and reading journal assignments have a one-class grace day. This grace period does not extend to essays, since we will rely on peer response to revise. If you're having trouble completing your assignments, please talk to me.
Academic honesty: We will discuss plagiarism, but you should also familiarize yourself with University policy as stated in the Student Handbook (7.III.A). Plagiarism can result in failure in the course and temporary or permanent removal from the University.
Americans with disabilities: The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 state that qualified students with disabilities who meet the essential functions and academic requirements are entitled to reasonable accommodations. Please speak with me at the beginning of the course if you have disabilities that fall within the guidelines.
Statement on discrimination/harassment: The University and the Alabama State Board of Education are committed to providing both employment and educational environments free of harassment or discrimination related to an individual's race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, or disability. Such harassment is a violation of State Board of Education policy. Any practice or behavior that constitutes harassment or discrimination will not be tolerated.
